Our story begins with plaster.
Long before Sustain was a design studio, a construction team or a showroom in downtown Hood River, it was a wall; troweled by hand, layer by layer, until a flat surface became something with depth. That's where the name comes from, and it's still what we believe: that the things worth building are the ones made with care.
Plaster taught us to slow down. It's an old material, clay and lime, nothing synthetic, nothing hidden and it rewards patience. No two walls come out quite the same, proof that a person made it: small imperfections, shifts in tone as the light moves through a room. We carried this idea of craft into everything else we do.
Design, shaped by how you live.
Every space we design starts with listening. We spend time understanding how a room will be used, how light moves through it, what a client's daily life actually looks like. The result is a space that feels considered from the studs out, built around real function and lasting comfort rather than a passing style.
Construction, without the guesswork.
Beautiful design only means something if it's built well. That's why Sustain is design-led from day one. Every project moves forward with clear drawings and defined specifications. Our team stewards each job from concept through completion, backed by daily communication and construction management software that gives clients and subcontractors visibility into the site from anywhere. It earned us preferred status with the best subcontractors in the Gorge; relationships built the same way we build everything else: through trust, consistency and follow-through.
A showroom rooted in place.
Walk into Sustain Home on 1st Street in Hood River, and you're standing inside the same philosophy. The furniture, art and objects we curate all draw from what's just outside the door: the forests, rivers and open terrain of the Columbia River Gorge shape the materials, textures and forms you'll find on our shelves. It's a space for finding the pieces that finish a room, and increasingly, a gathering place, hosting local makers, artists and pop-ups that bring the community together around thoughtful design.
One belief,
four expressions.
Four different crafts, one throughline: how something is made matters as much as how it looks.
Sustain exists to build spaces, and a life around them, with that same care, from the first wall to the last piece of furniture in the room.
